Thanks to PETA's undercover investigation of University of Utah labs for bringing this issue to media attention. The practice gained wider publicity after the animal rights group PETA said earlier this month that 1 of its agents spent eight months working undercover at University of Utah research facilities. I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment. And that relationship usually has something to do with PeTA. But I don't want to talk about PeTA. A recent post by Sara Krupp (" Can Animal Activism Go Too Far? ") unfortunately equates "animal activism" with PeTA, I noticed. They've hijacked enough already!

Of course there are oodles of vegetarians who mention veganism and how difficult and restricting it is, and overall I'm having a fairly disheartening experience. In other words, vegans who don't support PeTA and don't campaign for larger cages are alien to most of the non-vegan world and even much of the vegan world.

Many people say that PETA relies too heavily on emotion to argue its position. But in my experience, it usually backfires, particularly with men. You'll find this dilemma surrounding issues such as the death penalty, abortion and gay marriage. And it's especially the case in animal rights advocacy. I'm really torn.

That's why people say that they have no problem eating them, harvesting them, experimenting on them, etc. Humans get all wrapped up in stories of those who can communicate their sufferings. Animals can't do that. The animals can't say, "This hurts me," "Stop it," or "I have a right to my life." There is a group for every cause. Best Friends?

All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen). There might be a handful of PeTA efforts around suffering, and there is " That's Why We Don't Eat Animals ," but what we need is a series--a franchise that makes veganism appealing.
