I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California. A Southern Cassowary ( Casuarius casuarius ) that may have tried to kill me. This compact and surprisingly wide billed little bird used to be part of the monarch-flycatcher family, but is now with its congener in its own family. There were also treats for fans of parrots, including a Double-eyed Fig-parrot and some King Parrots.

Over the years, I’ve chronicled an apparent decline in the numbers of the birds hanging around the kill-zone.

I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay. Every now and the the loosing Loon would disappear like it had been killed and sunk. Sometimes that one reaches adulthood, but just as often it disappears. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle.

It’s a natural event, part of the natural “Circle of Life” as Disney might have it. And Pippa, our biologist, was very concerned. Her concern was well founded. Those collars save lives.
