Most of the usual birds seem present, a frog or two call from a small wetland, and a few other expected animals are there too. However, we can’t go wrong in protecting habitat at and near the place where the one specimen was taken; a site on Miravalles Volcano. These are the critically endangered birds of Costa Rica.

Individually, many NWRs protect crucial bird habitat. For example, essentially the entire population of the endangered Whooping Crane winters at Aransas NWR in Texas. But when taken as a whole, the impact of the Refuge System is truly profound, supporting population-level numbers of numerous bird species.

The King Shag has a small population breeding on four protected islands in the Sounds and a small number regularly roost on on Blumine Island (and have even been nesting recently, perhaps successfully), and sure enough they were there and we were able to admire them. Also present was another lifer for me, the South Island Saddleback.

We are driving along the main road, by troops of Rhesus macaques, and continue by a dirt road into the forest, passing by two handsome but ever-present Indian Peacocks. A survey in 2011 in non-protected areas of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh confirmed the presence of the species at two locations.

Today it is placed in its own monotypic genus, Oreophasis , and loosely grouped with the present day curassows and chachalacas. It is believed that the population in El Triunfo, Chiapas is stable, but throughout its range the population is still declining and the Horned Guan is an endangered species.

The fish owl is an endangered species, and before Slaght’s work, very little was known about it, especially in Russia. (It It is also native to Japan, where it is protected and protectively studied to the point where Slaght had trouble getting any information.). So, Blakiston’s Fish Owl it was.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call.
