A prime example is a report newly released by the Center for Biological Diversity which suggests that, by and large, in the United States, the Endangered Species Act is indeed helping to save the birds it protects. Continental U.S. So, how about we add most of the rest of North America’s birds to the list?

I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection. But jobs that depend on harvesting endangered species will quickly disappear if those species are not protected.

All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. Around 3,000 birds summered and bred at Birecik in the 1930’s but this declined to only 400 by 1982.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In South America, several key Red Knot sites are becoming shorebird reserves, and regional efforts are including the protection of habitats in urban development plans.

Of course, the California Condor is listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and it has been famously subject to some of the most ambitious conservation efforts (including litigation ) ever undertaken for a bird. But that does not necessarily mean there are no protections.

The rights view is not opposed to efforts to save endangered species. If people are encouraged to believe that the harm done to animals matters morally only when these animals belong to endangered species, then these same people will be encouraged to regard the harm done to other animals as morally acceptable.
