Here in Suffolk we now have impressive wintering flocks of Barnacle Geese, often numbering 1000 birds or more. The purist birders take little interest in them, regarding them as no more interesting, or exciting, than the flocks of Canada Geese that have long been established in the county. It’s spectacular stuff.

The open plains are now busy with young Magpie Geese and numerous other waterbirds and the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are busy feeding up before migration. Masked Lapwings have been busy breeding for some months now and some may well be on their second clutch of eggs. Masked Lapwing protecting a nest.

New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. Here is her description of migrating Snow Geese: I’d seen snow geese at great distances offshore or far overhead, but here they are passing me by, low on the water, where the wind speed is lessened. Ahead on the water, I see roughly 200 tired snow geese settled together in a single, densely packed group.
