5 Puzzling Toys That Will Keep Your Pup Entertained for Hours

4 The Love Of Animals

'A bored puppy is an unhappy puppy, and possibly a destructive puppy. Puzzles are great tools to keep boredom away. Dogs are intelligent animals. Your dog’s wild cousins such as the dingo and the coyote need to use their cleverness to find and capture food. You’re the alpha of your dog’s pack, and so the heavy lifting of the food gathering would fall to you.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of June 2013)

10,000 Birds

'Before this lovely June weekend began, I bemoaned the evident end of spring migration. What I failed to recognize were all the great things that happen around here when the waves of migrants subside. For example, the local farmers’ markets are back in action! If you can’t get fresh birds, at least enjoy fresh produce. My favorite sighting this weekend was a House Wren at my house.

Coming Back to Listing

10,000 Birds

'I have a confession that I hope won’t get me kicked off this blog: I have no idea where my life list currently stands. Since I moved to Montana I’ve been updating it sporadically at best, and over the past year or so, not at all. Part of this is a simple technology problem — my official list is stored in a clunky, outdated format at an internet location I rarely visit any more.

Birdwatching Santiago de Chile Part-2

'Continued from: Birdwatching Santiago de Chile – Trip Report. We stayed at the foot hills of La Campana National Park with the hopes to get a look at the Rufous-legged Owl. By the time we had dinner and arrived to our hotel we were so exhausted that it became impossible to go search for this endemic bird. The next morning we began a slow climb through the brushy trails of the park, I was unfamiliar with most of the bird calls, so we proceeded with caution making sure we looked at everyth

Purple Herons at Waghäusel

'Purple Herons Ardea purpurea are an old world element of the Ardeidae and range widely throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe and central Asia. Within Europe, they are mostly found in the South (around the Mediterranean), and the East. Germany is not really within the species’ breeding range, and there is only one area where the herons have bred continuously and successfully since the 1970′s: Waghäusel, an area of former waste water ponds of a &

I and the Bird: What is a Wren?

10,000 Birds

'There are few birds in the sprawl of suburbia or the sylvan ideal of semi-rural existence as appreciated as wrens. Sure, they may lack the audacious colors of jays or the imposing attitudes of raptors, but it is wrens, with jaunty tails and brazen attitudes and ringing, rambling voices, that re on anyone’s short list of favorite garden birds for almost as long as humans have paid attention to birds.

The Warbler Guide: A Book Review by a Warbler-challenged Birder

10,000 Birds

'Imagine a world without warblers. No small songbirds feeding like moving jewels in the canopy. A distinct lack of birdsong on a May morning. “Warbler-neck” would become “kingbird-neck” or “gnatcatcher neck”. Without birds like Blackburnian Warbler to spark people’s interest in birding, we would have far fewer birders. (Famously, the Blackburnian was the spark bird for notable birder Phoebe Snetsinger; it was also the spark bird for my friend Marylee,) Without warblers, migrant hotspots like the

Birding’s changing fortunes

10,000 Birds

'Luck. In Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Novels luck is the goddess that only the foolhardy worship, or even mention by name. Call her the Lady. She can give, or take away, on a whim. And birders know a lot about luck. Yes, you can prepare yourself by knowing calls, habitats, behaviour and personal diary of a bird, but it’s all for nothing if the Lady decides that the bird you are after has a pressing lunch engagement on the other side of town.
