The Thing About Colombia

10,000 Birds

The nation of Colombia has been the victim of some bad press over the last few decades, not all of this is entirely unjustified. The 70s and 80s were not a good time for the South American nation, nor were they for much of the continent. The government of Colombia was involved in a long-simmering and occasionally boiling war with guerilla groups in the rural parts of the country.

North Cave Wetlands

10,000 Birds

We visited North Cave Wetlands on October 22nd this year while we were in the UK and it is across the River Humber from my parent’s home and close to where we worked when we lived there in 1987. At that time it was not a nature reserve at all and the forty hectare piece of land was only acquired in 2001. We were constantly being asked locally if we had crossed the river yet to see the magnificent birding at North Cave Wetlands and so it was only a matter of time before we headed over the H

Does it Count? or Is This a List I See Before Me?

10,000 Birds

Regular readers to the blog may have noticed Redgannet’s post on some delightful finchbills he saw in China. In the post he agonised about whether they should be included on his life list due to their “doubtful provenance” I started to formulate a reply, and it got rather big, so rather that leave this on his own post, unread, I decided to post it here instead.

Birding Florida Caverns State Park

10,000 Birds

Florida Caverns State Park is known for one, quite obvious thing: the caverns. It’s not surprising – they’re amazing and the park staff have done a fabulous job facilitating tours – but the park is also known for birding opportunities. This fall, I stopped at Florida Caverns with two friends who had never visited before. While they took the 45 minute tour, I opted to explore some of the rare upland hardwood forest growing within the park borders.

AOU + COS = AOS

10,000 Birds

It’s official: The AOU (American Ornithologists’ Union) and the COS (Cooper Ornithological Society), which both date back to the late 19th century, have merged. (Could this be the most meta “lump” of all?). After pursuing parallel missions and collaborating on everything from conferences to scientific publications, the two groups recently finalized their merger.

Liberal or literal?

10,000 Birds

This week brings the quandary of whether suspect provenance should disqualify a bird from my life-list. The bird in question is possibly the best looking one that I have seen this year and goes by the name of Collared Finchbill or Spezixos semitorques. It does not look especially striking in the field guide, nor do the accompanying pictures do it true justice, but when I saw it in a rare shaft of clear air in Beijing’s Botanic Gardens, it made me catch a breath.

My Top Ten Birds of 2016

10,000 Birds

The year 2016 has been a pretty good year. I opened the year in California and even though I flew out in the evening on New Year’s Day I did see some species out there that I would otherwise not have seen for the year. Winter birding around New York City was just so-so but I did add one species to my Queens list. The Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida was a nice break from winter though the blizzard back home forced me to drive back to New York adding birds seen on the ro

We are Just Money Grubbers

10,000 Birds

Out of just under 200 bird species I observed this year in SE Europe, there are 6 threatened species. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers. For example, I simply cannot comprehend how such seemingly common species such as the Common Pochard (yes, for the third time, the common), still allowed for shooting in

The Bird With Four Sexes

10,000 Birds

What is sex? This is a simple question with a complicated answer. Part of the answer is this: The biological identity of an individual that guides its choice of mate. So, in a simple version of the world of a bird, there are two sexes, male and female, and males chose females and females chose males as mates. Assume for a moment that there is choice, and that the choice is based on a discernible feature.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of December 2016)

10,000 Birds

Mid-December is rarely boring for anyone with lots of holiday shopping to do, but birders are as busy this time of year as anyone not working a cash register, ringing a bell, or wearing a Santa costume. How did your Christmas Bird Count go this weekend? Since I hate the bitter cold and snow afflicting my region, I stayed in as much as I could this weekend.
