Collaborative List – 2022

10,000 Birds

In 2022, the 10,000 Birds eBird Collaborative submitted 1,837 checklists from 9 countries ( Australia , China , Costa Rica , Mexico , Saint Lucia , Serbia , Trinidad and Tobago , United Kingdom , and the United States ) and observed 1,273 species. The Collaborative life list increased to 4,140.

Creepers in the Forest

But this book taught me about eagles, owls, storks and herons. Not all the birds, of course, but many of the distinctive and conspicuous species. Turns out that the Streak-headed Woodcreeper was a formerly uncommon resident of Trinidad, its range gradually increasing to cover semi-degraded and altered habitat.

The sky cracked open as we ascended into the modest hills of Trinidad’s Northern Range. Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper in T&T, and they have a proportionately massive bill. Black Hawk-Eagle Perceiving the world by sound reveals much that would otherwise slip through the cracks.

Trinidad’s cloud forests typically aren’t birded much. These magical forests hide isolated treasures like the critically endangered Golden Tree Frog – not to mention several species of birds not found anywhere else in the country. Not for long though, as the walking began shortly thereafter.

Soda Lake Shorbs

Obliging species like Grey-headed Kingfisher , Long-crested Eagle , and even a pair of Greater Blue-eared Starlings ensured we didn’t get anywhere quickly. Needless to say, I was still overwhelmed by the presence of numerous species of shorebirds I hadn’t previously seen.

It had been some months since we had been in the hills of Trinidad’s Northern Range, and let it be known that all forests are very different. But with a Collared Trogon calling above us as well as all three species of honeycreepers feeding at eye-level, we were well and truly occupied. You can view the eBird list here.

Birdy Boating in Baringo

A familiar Striated Heron elicited the opposite reaction altogether as they are the default small heron here in Trinidad. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (above), African Fish-Eagle (below). Malachite Kingfisher. Common Sandpiper.
