The Reva Situation

Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all. The eagle seemed well-used to people and paid no attention either. Reva had the semi-natural feeling of a forgotten green oasis at the outskirts of a busy city.

However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). It’s the only Dutch eagle. Our eagle makes Baldy look imparfait, even a bit manqué. It was awful. Buffon 5 – Jefferson 0.

Fog, drizzle and four road blockades

At first I thought of a possible road accident, but soon I learned that protesting farmers have blocked the road ahead. Not at all, they are very right to protest, and I have no issue with the farmers – we all share the same enemy, our own President. Protest indeed! There’s an incoming car in my lane, and I am not in India!

Beljarica Backwaters: Some good news announced (but not yet official)

White-tailed Eagles in Beljarica. It is a spacious floodplain between the River Danube and the levee, 2.1 mi at its widest point and some 9 km2 / 3.5 It all started well three decades ago, when I intensively birded the Danube Backwaters by kayak. As a teenager in Yugoslavia, I used to buy National Geographic in second-hand bookshops.

More Swamp Stories

While we were there, a pair of Rufous Crab Hawks noisily protested the presence of a Common Black Hawk that was comfortably perched in the vegetation. Eagle eyes found this Pinnated Bittern in the reeds. One of two Red-bellied Macaws that made a close pass while we had breakfast on a remote access road through the forest.

The irony that wind allegedly produces ‘green’ or renewable energy isn’t lost on those that protest against the hundreds of planning applications that are lodged annually for new wind farms. Dunmaglass is an area close to locations known to be frequented by Golden Eagles.
