There is another raptor over the ridge, light body and wings, dark head and chest – the Short-toed snake Eagle. I am exhilarated – I have had only a handful of chances to observe this species! Such a fascinating species. How old are they as a species? Eleonora’s Falcons are migrants themselves.

The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed. I photographed one to show the brightness displayed, but for a better look at this species you can look here. A Grey Shrike-thrush was vocal and investigating the area that we chose to sit for our lunch.

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Its great diversity of habitats hosts an incredible bird count of over 900 species, including Africa’s 2nd highest list of endemics and near-endemics (after South Africa). Other quality birds seen in the park that morning included the endemic Wattled Ibis, Banded Snake Eagle , migrant Pallid Harriers, Nubian Woodpecker and Brown Babbler.

I remember, several times while motionlessly surveying birds, I found myself being investigated by Striped Field Mice , who would dare to come to sniff me. For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures !

Derby is approximately 225 kilometres from Broome and has had almost three times the rainfall that Broome has had so far this month and so we thought it would be interesting to go and investigate the various birding areas that we knew of from other visits during our dry months. My Dad is less of a biologist and more interested in history, but is also laid back and happy enough watching us have fun, but we even managed to find some historical sites to investigate. Between the 22 of December and the 31st I managed to see 171 species of bird, this had climbed to 219 by the time I had left of the 11th of January.

We found a total of five species of wood-warbler, no thrushes, one vireo, no tanagers, and Clay’s bike’s front tire found a thorn, though we would not be made aware of that until later. A stop at Hidden Valley netted us several species, including our only Scarlet Tanager of the day as well as a surprise fly-by adult Bald Eagle.
