Derby is approximately 225 kilometres from Broome and has had almost three times the rainfall that Broome has had so far this month and so we thought it would be interesting to go and investigate the various birding areas that we knew of from other visits during our dry months. Well, the Brown Quail flew and then dropped and ran!

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

For birders who have visited T&T in the past, the livestock station has always been a staple site for several key species that would be fairly difficult elsewhere. Safe to say no species was left behind! As it had done in every previous count at almost the same time, a hulking Black Hawk-Eagle glided into view.

They were even investigating an old fire pit, which was interesting to observe. They were the first of many of the finch family that we would observe along the Negri River. It didn’t take us long to set off to go exploring to see what the area could offer and we were soon writing down a huge variety of species.

This is not to say, however, that birders on holiday are, should they choose to travel with family, friends or other assorted loved ones, resigned to seeing nothing, or even nothing except the common stuff.
