We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Finally, the shores of the Telia lie in front of us. He has earned his tip.

Derby is approximately 225 kilometres from Broome and has had almost three times the rainfall that Broome has had so far this month and so we thought it would be interesting to go and investigate the various birding areas that we knew of from other visits during our dry months. The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

While investigating a roadside patch, a couple wasps nailed me on my neck and head – almost scrambling my mental tally of Palm Tanagers , a Grey-fronted Dove , and Shiny Cowbirds. They were even investigating an old fire pit, which was interesting to observe. They were the first of many of the finch family that we would observe along the Negri River. The largest bird being a Wedge-tailed Eagle , followed by Black Kites, Whistling Kites, a pair of Little Eagle, Nankeen Kestrel and Brown Goshawk.

Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay.
