Actually, I am not waiting for them, but for the Eastern Imperial Eagle to come here to hunt Susliks – an eagle from one of the last two remaining nests in Serbia. Alas, there is no eagle to be seen either. Not an eagle in sight. Blackcap , European Stonechat … no eagles.

Some farming activity in the area meant that there had been some manner of clearing created. Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. Black Hawk-Eagle Perceiving the world by sound reveals much that would otherwise slip through the cracks. Believe me, we tried!

A shot or two coming from the opposite bank, but they do not sound like geese shooting – more like boar hunting. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here.

A birder needs access to large areas of mature forest that also offer up chances at seeing glittering flocks of tanagers, checking out the tail bobbing behavior of cool antbirds, and glassing a hawk-eagle or two. This is what a Black Hawk-Eagle shape looks like. Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove. Black Guan.

Traditional farming landscape of small holdings, hedges and groves draped in snow… I actually hate snow, but on days like this, cannot resist it. And I didn’t pay enough attention because one very dark eagle flew by at the same time, an adult Greater Spotted Eagle.
