Between March and May, we say goodbye to more than half our duck and wood warbler species, as well as about half of all our shorebirds, vireos, hummingbirds, buntings, sparrows, and orioles, and many members of other avian families. And there is some sweetness in these bittersweet months. They are our summer consolation prizes.

A Gentlemen’s Big Day’s Birding

In my younger days I was very keen on what is generally known as Big Day Birding, or trying to see as many species of birds as possible in one day. Called The Big Bird Race , it tells the story of how my team, representing Country Life magazine , recorded 155 species in 24 hours in East Anglia (Suffolk and Norfolk).

Week 26: San juan Islands

The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. This is also the location of the great Pig War of 1872. Little Big Year species count: 834.

Local Specialties at Lake Junin

There is a rich assortment of Andean ducks, coots, and other waterfowl. The Juni Rail is considered by some to be a sub-species of the wide-spread Black Rail seems. Getting out of Wellington

We lose a handful of species, mostly waders flying across the whole Pacific but also a cuckoo flying just half of it. The more rural shoot pigs, deer and ducks. Partly that’s because it is winter, which I guess makes this my annual *shake my fist at Northern Hemisphere types who have summer now* post.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species.
