Not so with our visit to Bosque de Apache NWR in southern New Mexico. This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. The second half of the week was spent near the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. US species – 243.

In fact, the overwhelming majority of federal land is in just 11 western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). The Laysan Duck is found on only two remote Hawaiian atolls, both NWRs.

Taking time to give each and every one a good looking over can take away from the time I spend looking for Lazuli Buntings, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks , or other more exciting birds. Zone-tailed Hawks can be found in the extreme lower parts of the US, in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, with an estimated population of 450-650 birds.

Birding trips to Florida , New Mexico , and Texas are obvious too. For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California. Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico. I wrote about Waterfowl Production Areas in this region (America’s duck factories) and want to visit, though the details of visiting an area that spans 100,000 square miles are to be determined. Lifers included Wood Stork, White-eyed Vireo, and Limpkin.
