Birding trips to Florida , New Mexico , and Texas are obvious too. For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California. And I will continue my quest to see all of my Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for Birding too.

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico. I particularly enjoy birding national wildlife refuges, so I try to include at least one on each trip. A direct flight from Portland is also a plus, as is seeing new parts of America.

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. But mostly, there was just lots and lots of water.
