When is a Vulture Not a Vulture?

I have been lucky enough to get close views of two massive Old World Vulture species, the Eurasian Griffon and the Egyptian Vulture. Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Black Vultures are a bit smaller than all these other species.

So, the basic idea is to show 15 species of Australian birds in each post and give you the usual trivia about them. One of my most vivid memories of watching The Sopranos – still the best TV series ever, in my opinion – is Tony outside barbecuing, occasionally turning the different pieces of meat.

These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). While it also eats dead meat and carcasses like its relatives, its favorite food is palm nuts. The White-eared Barbet is another bird species with an annoyingly sensible Latin species name, leucotis (white-eared).

Actually, I visited the Two Towers twice, had about 50 bird species each time and about 60 in total, so this is sort of a composite tour description. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks. In recent years, two races did become full species.).
