Finally, South Africa has three 400+ hotspots, namely 1 Mkhuze Game Reserve 458 sp. There are many species of waders and ducks, vultures, raptors and storks. Local birders here manage to spot 100+ species before breakfast, with Pink-backed Pelican , Goliath Heron , Allen’s Gallinule and Malachite Kingfisher among them.

For all that, though, migration here is still largely a water-based show, with the most spectacular signs of springs coming in the forms of ducks, geese, and swans. As ponds thaw open reports are coming in of Barrow’s Goldeneye, Pied-billed Grebe, Cinnamon and Green-winged Teal, Gadwall and Wigeons and Shovelers. The result?

Brown Pelican and Brandt’s Cormorant roost here and can be seen flying in and out all day. In winter a few ducks are likely. Low tide reveals a small beach which may attract Marbled Godwit who were playing sanderling games in the gently advancing water during this most recent visit.

Because it is much more interesting to predict the birds that will get me to my 300th Queens bird I will break from my tradition and predict my next eleven birds this time unlike the last three times I played this game and predicted my next ten. Brown Pelican - I refuse to acknowledge the unlikeliness of my finding one.

Most will be familiar with a game that matches the face value of playing cards and prompts a loud “snap” to win a hand. African Black Duck – Anas sparsa – Walter Sisulu Botanic Gardens – Jan 15th. Red-billed Duck – Anas erythrorhyncha – Marievale Bird Sanctuary – Jan 13 th.

I always undertake a number of short timed surveys for the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count in February, and though the counts didn’t add anything to the year list, they were memorable for finding big flocks of finches and buntings, while a daylight-hunting Barn Owl was a pleasing sight.

American White Pelican. Black-bellied Whistling Duck. A Brown Pelican would be a nice bird to add to the Queens list. Brown Pelican is missing from my Queens list and this is an ideal weekend to hit the beach. An Elegant Tern would be an amazing 300th bird! Red-necked Stint. Virginia’s Warbler. Little Gull.
