Last month, I wrote about hypothesized relationships between passerines, parrots, falcons, and seriemas , noting a need for further research on the subject. The guide is based on Sullivan’s composite photographic plates, which present whales, dolphins, shearwaters and petrels, alcids, jaegers, skuas, tropicbirds, gannet and boobies, flying fish, jellyfish side by side, as they are likely to be seen from a boat, though in all likelihood not in so much diversity and abundance.

Scientific research shows that many animals are very intelligent and have sensory and motor abilities that dwarf ours. People have reported dolphins struggling to save a dead calf by pushing its body to the surface of the water. Nonetheless, they adjusted their behavior to allow Babyl to remain with the group. by Marc Bekoff.

Some (but not most) killer whales beach themselves on land or ice to get at sea mammals or penguins, and some dolphins do similar things. During this study, all the pigeon predation was observed on one small island where the birds grouped to preen and drink. Or, it could just be some weird thing one group of catfish do.

It is acceptable to point out other sea creatures–dolphins or whales or dragonflies–but the main goal is the observation and identification of the birds. The focus is on “groups of birds that are often observed in diurnal migration.” Also, because The Shorebird Guide already covers this group so completely.)
