Though they weight less than two ounces, Least Terns migrate from South America to the West, East, and Gulf Coast to breed on dunes or flat gravel roofs (there are also populations in the middle of the United States). There is no mistaking a Least Tern: they were back! Are you going to be on a Least Tern-inhabited beach this summer?

A flock of small birds at the dyke, Yellowhammers mostly… I cannot see well because of one enthusiastic hunting dog which takes pleasure in running through the snow and flushing them up whenever the birds land. Watch for the dark beaks.” Yeah, right. In this light, all beaks are dark! An hour and 20,000+ geese later, we head back.

Burrowing Owls, whose range extends into Mexico, the United States, and South America, can live in varied habitats , including deserts and grasslands, golf courses and airports, agricultural fields and vacant lots. They are fairly small owls , standing around eight inches tall and weighing a little more than five ounces.

But soon they’ll all depart, perhaps the Peregrines already have, racing Winter’s advance, waiting her out in South America before that biological imperative pushes them back home to the cliffs of Arctic Bay.
