Hawk-Eagle Sweep in Costa Rica

If a large, powerful bird of prey capable of terrorizing a Wild Turkey comes to mind, that may be a fair definition of a hawk-eagle. Like a Northern Goshawk on steroids with fancy plumage, these birds can take small monkeys, opossums, ibis, toucans, macaws, and other medium-sized animals of the rainforest.

A Quick Trip to the Yucatan

In addition to Coati we also spotted Agouti , White-tailed Deer , and the endemic subspecies Yucatan Spider Monkey. Sure I spotted the occasional Melodious Blackbird and I was amused watching a Hooded Oriole feeding a Bronzed Cowbird but the birding was definitely less-than-stellar. It was pretty awesome.

Birding the Trinity Hills

We also saw a small group of Guianan Red Howler Monkeys feeding nearby. Definitely a place that warrants multiple visits. Turquoise Tanager. Dusky-capped Flycatcher (lower right) and a Rufous-tailed Jacamar. After about ten minutes, the male began his characteristic, bone-shaking howling.
