Of course , I say to myself, language is worth fighting for. And it usually involves exchanges with non-vegans. I could debate about language all day, with vegans and non-vegans. --would call HSUS an animal rights group (after all, HSUS doesn't even do that). Won't the battle always be won by common usage/the majority?

I say "if you know someone" because this isn't a book I'd recommend to vegans for their vegan education efforts. The vegans I know would probably find it a bit maddening, and here's why: We aren't sure whether Foer is a vegan. Of course, what they are talking about and how they are changing their behavior is very frustrating for someone who doesn't believe we should be using animals at all. Now, any medication we take and surgical procedures we undergo also have a long line of breeding, enslavement, torture and killing of sentient nonhumans leading up to them, so objecting to "knockout animals" on those grounds is to stand on somewhat thin ice. Why kill and maim and waste taxpayer dollars--or any dollars--on such things?

There are two approaches a vegetarian might take in arguing that rearing and killing animals for food is morally offensive. He might argue that eating animals is morally bad because of the pain inflicted on animals in rearing and killing them to be eaten. Or he could object to the killing itself.

Vegan vegetarians who eat only vegetables, fruit, and nuts do not completely remove all microorganisms from their food, even with repeated cleaning. Second, it might be argued that although it is wrong to kill microorganisms, it is not obvious that eating them kills them. Killing a hog can be avoided.

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely).
