On the Lake with American White Pelicans

10,000 Birds

For the past few years, they’ve been mere acquaintances, passing through North Florida on their way to who knows where. I’m talking, of course, about “my” flock of American White Pelicans. I cross my fingers that they make it safely, raising voracious chicks before returning to the Sunshine State once more.

The Florida FWC illegally killed 34 pythons and one 10-year-old pregnant Boa constrictor

Reddit Animals

New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). In 2021, Florida banned reticulated pythons, forcing Coffee to find homes for the pythons outside of Florida. Of course they would react differently.

But…It’s a Canada Goose?

10,000 Birds

Luis Gonzalez is a Miami resident and IT major who was originally born and raised in Cuba. And something different I got!

There are, of course, more big years happening this year. The following is not an exhaustive list, of course, but hopefully we will learn of more big years in the comments. Spotting My First Horned Owl in Veteran’s Park

10,000 Birds

Two Great Horned Owl chicks had successfully fledged from Veteran’s Park at Baywalk , a small park that was once a three-hole golf course on Okaloosa Island. All the local birders had seen them, and though I arrived on the Florida Panhandle too late to observe them when they were young, I fervently wished to see them all grown up.

Of Nesting Spoonbills, Nestling Flamingos, Left-the-Nest Shearwaters, and Mystery Gulls

10,000 Birds

First off, Audubon of Florida reports that counts indicate more Roseate Spoonbills are nesting in Florida Bay (between the mainland and the Keys) this year than last year, although those numbers are still lower than in the last decade. Of course not! And they’re making the news, too.

Whooping Crane at Joe Overstreet Road

10,000 Birds

Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. From 1993 to 2004, biologists released 289 captive-raised whooping cranes into central Florida. That number has continued to shrink.
