Last week, I “attended” the virtual North American Ornithological Conference (NAOC). As I said in an earlier post , I was curious whether an ornithological conference would be interesting to a birder, so I plunked down $50 for registration and planted myself in front of Zoom for several hours a day. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge , AKA Tinicum, is an outstanding urban oasis in southern Philadelphia, less than one mile from Philadelphia’s airport. This area, administered for the benefit of wildlife and people, was known as Tinicum Wildlife Preserve. Being a New Yorker, I had never birded the refuge before.

Handing out T-shirts at the registration desk with a summer intern from the Field Museum (one of the conference’s sponsoring groups) gave me a good feel for who was around and what ornithologists are like. Like most conferences, this one had an exhibit hall and poster session, too. Oh, if I didn’t have a day job!).

This spurred her to pursue a career in environmental education and wildlife nature tourism as a park ranger in Texas and as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator with Florida Fish and Wildlife. Buying a bunch of votes and dropping it like a big crap bomb at an annual meeting may get you what you want but boy howdy, I can’t imagine people lining up to join that group. The 2012 event was held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a pleasant way to spend and hour on the refuge.
