This year has been different as we have a new visitor-the Zebra Finch. The last time we saw Zebra Finch visit our garden was a pair in 2004 and then suddenly in April this year they appeared in large numbers all around Broome’s coastline and at the Poo Ponds. I went out to sit on the lawn and take some photographs.

The species is classified as Near Threatened for all the usual depressing reasons – pollution, drainage, hunting, and the collection of eggs and nestlings ( source ). After the two broadbill species at the start of this post, the other main attraction is a pair of two trogons.

Now, you collect the nine pieces of paper from the last generation of copiers. Zebra Finch ( Taeniopygia guttata ), one of the study subjects, in Indonesia © David J. Persons 1 and 2 copy the page exactly and each give it to three other people. Not everyone entirely agrees with this assessment, but more on that in a moment.

We observed Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch, Masked Finch, Double-barred Finch, Star Finch and the rare Gouldian Finch … an uncommon red-headed male no less! It obviously had a bit of a bone fetish and had collected bones from both bird and animal. There are numerous cave drawings in the caves of varying size and clarity.

You will either have to leave it at the airport and collect it later (using up precious time), or carry it with you in hot, humid conditions. The SMRT is predicted to take 50 minutes to the gardens, but a cab would probably manage it in 30 minutes. Taxis can usually be found quickly and easily unless it is raining.

Apparently, while in Egypt waiting for a boat to return to Germany he collected specimens of the bird which is now named after him. Though I actually quite like zebras. Kittlitz’s Plover is named after Friedrich Heinrich, Freiherr von Kittlitz (1799-1874), a Prussian artist, explorer and naturalist.

Painted Finch collect the charcoal from the fireplaces in the area. There were Zebra Finch amongst them too. . There are a few river crossings that are dry for most of the year along the highway, but there are always small pools of water. Doolena Gorge is always worth a visit for its natural beauty.
