It is listed as vulnerable, though its rather rigorous treatment of the second, smaller chick in a clutch (it starves to death within 1 week, rarely a month, according to the HBW) offers the potential for collecting second-hatched chicks for reintroduction programs. When breeding, the female finds a cavity in a tree and seals the entrance.

My first instinct was that the rarest gull would rank high on the ‘most interesting’ scale, but that’s a lister’s instinct – a sort of stamp-collecting bias, at best. If you would kindly ignore the fact that it eats putrid, bloating seals, it’s adorable. It’s pink. Sometimes. A little bit.

You know the captain’s name already: the Ross’s Gull was named after Ross who collected the type specimen in 1823 on Melville Peninsula in the Canadian Arctic. Curiously, in 1831, McCormick was appointed a surgeon on HMS Beagle under the command of Captain FitzRoy and he expected to put together a sizeable natural history collection.

The magnificent view from the Cliff House includes the Seal Rocks just offshore. Isla Rasa was declared a sanctuary in 1964, and egg-collecting and disturbance during the breeding season are discouraged. At the Northwest corner of San Francisco is Point Lobos.

The highlight of the weekend was seeing a pair foraging on a beach, searching the sand and tide strands for various morsels like a turnstone, and approaching the dozing New Zealand Fur Seal without the slightest sign of fear. At the same location it was possible to watch Spotted Shags collecting nesting material and try and get airborne.
