You know the captain’s name already: the Ross’s Gull was named after Ross who collected the type specimen in 1823 on Melville Peninsula in the Canadian Arctic. Curiously, in 1831, McCormick was appointed a surgeon on HMS Beagle under the command of Captain FitzRoy and he expected to put together a sizeable natural history collection.

It has taken us around Western Australia on sealed and unsealed roads and over into the Northern Territory and shown us some amazing birding sights. If you are considering a vehicle for the outback and birding it is useful to have a Roo Bar, which protects your radiator if you have a close encounter with a kangaroo.

Penguins, Parrots and Wine on Matiu / Somes Island

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. At the same location it was possible to watch Spotted Shags collecting nesting material and try and get airborne. I’ll work on that.

The early threats of guano harvesting and egg collecting have been replaced by the more ominous threats of oil pollution and overfishing of their favorite food source – pilchards. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean.
