Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

Under these circumstances, changing the name of the eponymous woodpecker would likely have an infinitesimal impact. Was there confusion that impacted data collection or research or birding? The Bird Names for Birds group (and others) have raised significant issues and they have done the birding community a service. Navy ships.

The Golden-tailed Woodpecker shares something with the German flag – it is called golden-tailed even though to me the color of its tail is yellow, not golden. No doubt the woodpecker has similar considerations. But that is the environment they survive in, get grants, get professorships, etc.

This dirt road was the soybean truck-nightmare; about every 10 minutes we had large double-trailer trucks filled with soybeans drive very fast and raise a huge dust cloud that took another 5 minutes to settle. Another crested bird adding to my collection. Brown Cachalote. Crested Hornero. Lark-like Bushrunner. The cute couple!

We stop again and search the leaves: Rufous Treepie (a rather handsome forest crow), Greater Racket-tailed Drongo with its long streamers, Lesser Goldenback woodpecker… We’re winding through the forest. Raising and lowering its head, like stretching. Several more Langurs, but not a trace of an owlet. Humbly, we approach on foot.
