Who’s watching whom?

Last Monday, I collected Jamaican Nettletree seeds. In this case, the bird that came to investigate was a lovely male Berylline Hummingbird. Look to the right… A bit more to the center… There, just right. Seeds sprout, cuttings root, and apparently moribund plants suddenly produce surprising growth spurts.

Birding Inirida, Colombia, or river dolphins and hoatzins, part 2

Am I over-confident in my thinking that we were so interesting that they were investigating us for a good half an hour, until we moved further upriver? We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. Later, we would be seeing dolphins every day.

They are inquisitive birds that will take an interest in human activity and seem to have no concerns. Apostlebird investigating field-guide. We slowed right down as we knew there would be several of the birds present and being the fearless birds they are we didn’t want to collect them on the front of our car.

Being lazy, a bunch of researchers used camera traps to investigate the species rather than following the birds directly (which would have had some health benefits). If such human food is not available, the Yellow-billed Chough goes back to its original diet of (at least in Europe) grasshoppers, as described here.

Stuck in the middle (of the AOU/COS meeting)

Especially happily that the meeting was held at the Palmer House Hilton, right near my office, so that I was able to spend my morning volunteering and still put in a full day at work.). Months prior, a call for volunteers had gone out to local birders, and I happily signed up for a few shifts. Oh, if I didn’t have a day job!).
