Horrible Hybrids

Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. I’ve seen some weird-looking hybrids in duck collections. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

Birding Roebuck Plains from the highway

Birding around Kununurra

We returned to Lake Argyle before heading into town and the male Great Bowerbirds still had a bower in a very similar spot to last year with a similar collection of rocks and bones. They were collecting it and carrying it away for nesting under the culverts. Fairy Martin collecting mud. Bower at Lake Argyle. Crimson Finches.
