While eating lunch with Daisy and her family at a picnic area in Joshua Tree National Park the other day a small chipmunk-looking creature ventured out of the rock formation we were eating next to. White-tailed Antelope Squirrels are endearing little squirrels and it is well worth making their acquaintance.

Normally, it would not be possible to walk here, but people were drawing a collective sigh of relief as two nuclear powers stood down and petty rules were more pliant than usual. A Palm Squirrel and a Shikra agreed to a halt in hostilities for the day. The Purple Sunbird is an elegant example of it’s family.

This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. Dry and dusty Camino La Noria.

Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets. On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions !

The researchers divided the city’s land area into seven categories: (1) open space for conservation ( e.g., forest preserves), (2) open space for recreation, (3) other open spaces ( e.g. , trails/greenways and cemeteries), (4) water, (5) single family residential, (6) multifamily residential, (7) roads, and (8) all others.
