The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. This endearing and very familiar species grabbed the attention of all present, including the official event photographer from the THA! Three of them in fact, rare visitors from the north. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter.

Munkajarra Wetlands near Derby

It is of course a very popular place for waterbirds to drop by and sometimes there are large numbers of Purple Swamphens and Eurasian Coot present. Quite often there are Australian Pelicans , Brolga and Royal Spoonbills present and the egret species often include Great Egret , Intermediate Egret , Little Egret and Cattle Egret.

There are no trails as such, but you can follow in the cattle tracks along the edge of the river or the gravel tracks used by vehicles. Female Black-necked Stork “kneeling” Australian Pelicans feed along the Fitzroy River and are usually in the more tidal area of the river. Australian Pelicans. Little Pied Cormorant.

Brolga , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves , Little Corellas , Zebra Finch , Cockatiels, Budgerigars and Galahs were present early in the morning and late in the afternoon when they came in to drink. We chose to camp at the far end of Lake Canellan to be as far away from others as possible and to enjoy the bird-life in the area.

Birding Culebra, Puerto Rico

I constantly tried to turn them into Loggerhead Kingbirds , which are supposed to be present on Culebra but never had any luck. Cattle Egrets were easily found in any open areas, particularly around the airport and the eastern end of the island. I couldn’t believe how many Clapper Rails were in the mangroves along 250.
