Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

Birding Shanghai in March 2023

This is not an issue here in Shanghai – I have only seen them in very small groups this winter. The Scaly-breasted Munia has a larger head size than the White-rumped Munia , and a research paper speculates that this is a reason for its wider distribution range.

Persistence Pays Off For Burrowing Owls

Above is a photo of the only Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia ) seen at Tuscan Preserve back in February of 2010 when a group of concerned birders installed eight artificial burrows on this property, to be preserved in perpetuity. This property is also a site with vernal pools and uses cattle grazing for vegetation control.
