A Gathering at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Colusa NWR was beginning to fill its impoundments during this drought, and there were quite a few ducks and geese present. There were not only Cattle Egrets and Great Egrets ( Ardea alba ) but Snowy Egrets ( Egretta thula ) as well. Click on photos for full sized images.

Serbia – birding overview of a year in the Central Balkans

In the last ten years, Cattle Egrets have bred again, on and off, but for the first time since 1870s. Usually about 40K geese overwinter in Serbia, but the last cold spell, when the Danube was mostly frozen solid, pushed twice as many to Serbia. Common Quail , Grey Partridge , Turtle Dove , too.

Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. Hippo and attending Cattle Egret. It’s even possible to count exactly the same bird for both country’s lists. Yellow-billed Stork.

A flooded landscape

The Magpie Geese have dispersed from the previous area they were in, because it got too wet. Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!? The birds appeared to know they needed to move to and the Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks were flying away from the storm. Magpie Geese on the move.

Birding after the Wet Season

There had been cattle in the area and we kept coming across bizarre butterfly circles. All we can think is that they were attracted to an area where there had been cattle urine and they were getting the natural salts. Now it was nice to see our first Green Pygmy-Geese for the year, but nothing is as good as a Jacana!

Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese. Halfway between SouthWild Pantanal and the northern terminus of the Transpantaneira, Pousada Alegre offers slightly more affordable lodging set within a working cattle ranch. Crossing them was like taking a leap of faith each time.

What is killing birds at Karla Lake (Greece)?

At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. Common Kestrels could be seen, too, but were outnumbered by their more gregarious threatened cousins.
