If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Owls are a little different. They don’t build nests and some like Great Horned Owls take over old hawk or squirrel nests.

Week four: We wrap up our stay in the US.

A beautiful series of raised boardwalks have been constructed, allowing year round access to the area, thru the marsh area, all the way out nearly a half mile into the tidal flats. I ran into a birder on the board walk who asked if I had gotten to see the Northern Saw-whet Owl , back on the road into the refuge.

It watched me, calmly, until I sat down about 7 feet away (almost at minimum focusing distance) and we both regarded each other, and I occasionally raised the camera and snapped off another frame. I knew that it was a behaviour that was common in owls but I had never even heard of it with hawks before.
