Scanning the sky carefully, I was able to spot the main flock of around 35 pigeons, a second small group of 5 birds that had broken away, and eventually the singled-out pigeon that was being pursued by the falcon (seen in the image above). And the small group of five? So far, so good, so standard. Now, that was the interesting part.

In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock. Hardly the elegant, natural picture deserving of some seriously stunning birds!

Crocodiles, Cape Buffalo and Hippos are plentiful. This fun group shot has quite a variety of birds. This next group shot has from left to right, Wooly Stork , a Malibu Stork , and then the Yellow-billed Stork. There are not too many shorebirds here this time of year, but I have found a few of these Three-banded Plovers.

We had stopped at one of the massive over-looks near Roosevelt Lodge, when a small group of Pine Siskins flew all the way across the canyon, and landed in the tree above me. The location was super, and while there was nothing new, there was a nice group of birds. Where else but in Wyoming will you find Peacocks and a Buffalo together?

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. He interpreted the bones, also at Klasies but other sites in South Africa as well, to indicate that human ancestors hunted only Eland until they became fully modern very recently, then they started hunting the much more dangerous and harder to hunt Buffalo. Any buffalo bones from prior to that transition were obviously scavenged.
