Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock. Hardly the elegant, natural picture deserving of some seriously stunning birds!

Over a dozen distinctive ethnic groups exist here, many of whom live lives little touched by the modern world. The Turmi area is home to the Hamar tribe who numbering nearly 50,000 are one of the largest ethnic groups living in the Lower Omo Valley (with an approximate population of 200,000 tribal people). It was late December, 2012, and I slotted into a sizable group under the joint leadership of two highly respected birders. As prolific as the area was, the group was on the move. The group was significantly smaller, only myself and one other person. By 2015 I was assigned to lead a CBC group for the first time.
