The Tennessee Warbler is a poster child for the boreal forests of Canada and the far northern United States. Its population actually fluctuates in response to the availability of Spruce Budworm and though it nests on the ground it is entirely inseparable from the forests of the north during breeding season.

Signs of Spring Migration in Costa Rica

Based on birding this very morning from the back of my place in Costa Rica, I can guarantee that at least some Baltimore Orioles, Tennessee Warblers , a Painted Bunting and a few other migrants are still far to the south. Wilson’s Plovers are in Breeding Plumage. More Birds are Singing. All the way to Alaska maybe?

An Educational Mixed Flock

Green Herons , Eastern Kingbirds , Tree Swallows , Cedar Waxwings , and a host of other species were successful in breeding and there were a lot of birds around. It was a Tennessee Warbler and the identification was clinched by the tiny, pointed bill, the thin eye-line, and the green back and wings. And the pointy bill is the clincher.

A Few Highlights from the Annual Bird Count at Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica

The golden bird was on a buggy island in a wetland, a spot that also harbored many other wintering warblers including several Tennessees and a busy Worm-eating. An uncommon species in Costa Rica, it was in a brushy area that reminded me of its breeding grounds. My favorite, though, was my year Blue-winged Warble r. Agami Heron.

The trickle of migrants becomes a flood and then slows to a trickle again, leaving us New Yorkers with a host of Butterbutts and few other wood-warblers to tide us over until spring.
