The bird-richest region of Africa is its equatorial East: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi (unlike the rest, the last one, Burundi, is politically unstable and not recommendable). Kenya has 13 400+ hotspots, one of them 500+. The best timing is during the rains, April-May and October-November, when birds breed.
