Common Kingfisher , Common Hoopoe and the European Bee-eater come from their nesting holes at the high loess-bluff of the opposite, right bank of the river. These conditions offered easy access to hunters in a habitat where a bird as large as a Guan would have little chances to hide or scape. A captive breeding program was established with a facility at Gustavo del Solar’s property, not far from where the birds were re-discovered. Birds hatched in captivity have been re-introduced.

The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month.
