There are also dry areas but this great diversity has resulted in an incredible bird list of over 900 species including Africa’s 2nd highest count of endemics (after South Africa). Flocks of cheerful birds frequent caves and cliffs where they breed. They are particularly common around Lalibela where I took this image.

But they are believed to have previously occurred over a much wider area, including coastal West Africa and much of the wetlands of South Africa. This is due to the fact that only around 13% of paired birds successfully fledge a young bird.

The falcon breeds in south-eastern Siberia and Northern China but winters in Southern and East Africa. And those we see constantly stop passers-by to ask for the way to either Siberia or South Africa, depending on the season. Still as impressed as before? That can get annoying.

I grew up in one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Cape Town, South Africa. In fact, there is no other region in Africa that offers such a fantastic level of endemism in such an accessible location. It is when they are breeding that African Penguins are at their most endearing.

In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not. On the other hand, compared to the Laughing Dove , human life is still pretty long. A study found that Laughing Doves at a South African reserve have a life expectancy of 0.83 young in 1.5 Poor creatures.

None fly, most are curious and social, which probably contributes to our cultural perception of penguins as one step away from human. Eight to eleven photographs illustrate each two-page species account, and a map shows breeding sites and population strongholds. Some are cute, some are dignified (and royal!).

Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season. One Japanese study found that it arrives at its breeding grounds earlier than in the past, most likely due to increased spring temperatures. No wonder no species are named after me.
