This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents.

Burrowing Owls have been present at our school camera location since at least 1984. The colony has grown supporting up to 3 pairs of owls, all breeding at once! The owls from the old burrow area near the classrooms continue to raise multiple broods and 2 other pairs have since moved in.

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years.

Using the icons to locate specific bird families takes a little getting used to, but if you do it often it works well as a finding tool. I didn’t.). These are all informative and current.

I mentioned last week t hat the large Pied Oystercatcher family that had successfully raised three chicks this year for the first time may soon become a smaller family group. They were wandering further apart and I knew that it would not be long before the family group became smaller. Juvenile Pied Oystercatcher feeding.

This book is essentially about those birds that breed on the continent south of the Sahara, a topic few birders are familiar with. The rest of the 216 pages long book is devoted to various African bird families and half a dozen individual species. He has authored several other books and many articles, largely on natural history.

This was a pleasant surprise if only because I’m so used to the more technical views presented in his field guides. Also, I wish I could use the tiny birds for my own presentations. They portray the nesting cycles of Mallard, Red-tailed Hawk, and American Robin, illustrating the various ways in which birds create families.
