In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. It did not take long before we had a family group of Tufted Jays right by the side of the road (KM 216) and an uncommon Gray-collared Becard at the same spot.

Spot-breasted Oriole, attending its nest In my experience, male Spot-breasted Orioles begin to sing in the first half of March through most of May on the very same perch in the very same tree every day in spring. The young followed the parents around in small family groups well after they had fledged.

Think about it–how do you document the behavior of birds that spend years flying (or swimming) and feeding and, apparently, sleeping above or within the deep sea? We didn’t know much about migration routes, foraging away from the breeding colony, and feeding during migration, in the water and in the air. Who is it for?

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. Strangely, I like the messy look of the juvenile bird much better.

The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend.
