It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Great White Pelican is not just the name of a non-existent glam-rock band but also of a bird species. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you?

This is similar to the fact that all birds, even first time breeders within a species build identical nests. In another experiment, other species of Darwin Finches were kept next to Woodpecker Finches that used tools. I would not be surprised if smarter herons carry their bait around in search of the most productive pond.

I haven’t yet been birding in Europe but whenever I occasionally skim a field guide about the birds on the other side of the Atlantic, I’m always encouraged to find that I’m already familiar with many species found over there, even though most of my birding experience has been limited to eastern North America. I remember the talking (Song?)

Up the dirt track next to a hilltop church is not particularly productive at this time of year. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. According to the latest data, 273 bird species were recorded in the national park, 160 of them breeding in it. Practicalities.

Seawatching along the coast can be very productive, especially at spots like Bodega Head and Pigeon Point. Humboldt and Del Norte Counties offer top-knotch birding, and a suite of species that can’t be found in the rest of the state. There are plenty of desert species to see here as well. Arcata, CA. Fall through spring.

Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Storks are typically viewed as wetland species and whilst some storks are restricted to aquatic habitats, others are not. This is another wetland species that nests in sometimes huge colonies atop trees bordering rivers and lakes.
