Bright, but not the correct shade or combination – or even family. Still a notable sighting, however, as this Orange-backed Troupial was a brand new bird for me. After lunch, we continued our search, this time at the banks of a river where a resident family assured us that the birds passed through regularly. Which birds?

The Buff-necked Woodpecker (Taman Negara, Malaysia) is classified as Near Threatened, with the usual rationale of “habitat loss” (which sounds nicer than “evil humans destroying anything that does not immediately bring in money). Kind of like a diesel version.

11am: Get a call from Munchkin’s new family that they’re driving four hours to pick her up. 3pm: Arrive at the destination within one minute of the forever family coming to pick up the munchkin. 3:05pm: Feel convinced that this family is perfect for the munchkin (already did a virtual home visit a week earlier). I’ll meet them.

A mozzie bites me, so I take the “Expedition Plus Insect Repellent” from my rucksack (when I think about it now, any local brand would probably be equally efficient, but they lack the word “expedition” which immediately turns you into a proper explorer) and start spraying my hands and neck. Very dusty Swarovski CLs.

This boldness isn’t restricted to exchanges with other grouse, either: in some locales, members of this circumpolar family are astonishingly foolhardy around humans. But there’s at least one night on the Scottish calendar when the grouse enjoys a reprieve, at least from human appetites.
