Oh sure, you can go to Rock Creek Park or the Tidal Basin to seek out living avian species, or visitors can head to the Smithsonian museums for a dose of past and present bird lore from all over the world. Throngs of people had lined up on the rainy Sunday to see the brand new dinosaur and fossil exhibit, and it did NOT disappoint.

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The National Audubon Society Birds of North America covers all species seen in mainland United States, Canada and Baja California. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

A Field Guide to the Birds: Giving Field Marks of All Species Found in Eastern North America was published in 1934 by Houghton Mifflin (note–Peterson was 26 years old), after being rejected by four publishers. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.

Do not buy these books, unless you are collecting old bird books. First published in 1973 in association with the Asa Wright Center, the book focuses on species descriptions, with illustrations grouped together in plates positioned in the center of the book. The AOU has not accepted that split.

As this African Green Pigeon shows, the color should offer good camouflage for species living on trees. In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. Due to a misunderstanding, this species is currently banned in Russia ( Swift Tern ).

Painted Finch collect the charcoal from the fireplaces in the area. Continuing down the highway from Doolena Gorge towards Marble Bar you pass through a spectacular rock formation with a brand new section of bitumen. It is incredible how many species you can see in a few minutes. You can drive or walk slowly there and back.
