I could be reading into this, but it does appear that there's some discomfort on the part of non-vegans when they look through the calendar and I tell them the story. And when you're checking out at the health food store with your cans and bag of vegan dog food, how could that not be a seedy opportunity?

Alicia Silverstone was on the show as a spokesperson for the health benefits and other benefits of veganism. And I won't say she's not a "real vegan," as I'm not the vegan police. The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. Also, if, like me, you know someone who appreciates the things we do with language to mask the reality of our behavior, this is a great book. Not great, but good.

Here are some observations: When reading a book about gorillas to/with a seven-year old, I was struck by the mixed messages the book sent. Here 's the book, and in the preview you can see that in the beginning when the gorilla being described is male he is referred to as "he." I'm a terrible fiction writer.
