On the final leg of my “Old Home Week”, I travel out to Dog Lake, a pristine high mountain lake, surrounded by mature Ponderosa Pines. Heading down the highway… I am so out of here… Arriving at Dog Lake, is another one of those incredible moments when hundreds of amazing memories come crashing back.

From Florida to Maine and back again I toured urban forests, marshes, estuaries, and more, stopping along the way to visit family and friends. Exploring the trail, keeping the dog safely on a leash. Osprey and Royal Terns soared on the coastal winds overhead, and Red-winged Blackbirds sounded their raspy calls just about everywhere.

I heard Red-winged Blackbirds conk-a-ree-ing from phragmites. It didn’t take too long for my reverie in my birding Eden to be disrupted by an unleashed dog that flushed the geese. Greater White-fronted Goose in flight after being flushed by an off-leash dog. The morning wasn’t a total loss though.

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a member of the heron family. The Chinese Blackbird is among the most common birds in our compound. It sometimes makes a rather strange croaking noise, a bit as if a dog tries to bark but does not know how to do it properly. It is related to the Little Egret that also visits our compound.

The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park. Flying from kitten to hen to dog to cow to car to boat to steam shovel, the baby bird asks the timeless question, “Are you my mother?”

Eight years later, Christian Cooper birding Central Park became a very different kind of media image: the black man falsely accused by a white woman of threatening her life after asking her to leash her dog in the Ramble, an area where unleashed dogs are not allowed. It was the same day George Floyd was killed. I remember that day.
