Thankfully, we have already passed the bit where I humiliate myself in front of 22 Brazilian soccer players by tripping on my laces when trying to kick back their stray football. I first noticed the bird as it flew up from the ground and into the tree. I could not easily identify it straight away and needed to get a better look.

Migration makes them vulnerable to straying: Accidental Hoary Bats have been found as far afield as Bermuda and Iceland. P.S. Back to actual birds next week! I have been challenged over the few weeks we have been in Palmerston i n the Northern Territory by a little bird that has been making itself hard to photograph. This little bird is a Chestnut-breasted Mannikin and it is a good example how a few colours can make for a beautiful little bird. Chestnut-breasted Mannikins.

The park was created as much to protect the local communities from marauding elephants with a hatred of dangerous humans and a lack of interest in the differences between nations as it was to protect the elephants. It wasn’t massively easy to bird this park, at least not as a volunteer. But despite this, I did see birds.

There is a very distinctive smell found on seabird colonies, where thousands upon thousands of birds come to breed and, coincidentally, deposit large quantities of waste. Arriving at the colony the head lights go off and we move into position below the birds (trying not to fall over the cliffs and into the sea) coordinating everyone by radio.

Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. What a bird! Really well.
