A new book about the angelic-looking, identification-stumping birds of the oceans, rivers, and marshes has finally been published! That would be Terns of Europe and North America by Klaus Malling Olsen and Hans Larsson, published in 1995, another fantastic book, but out-of-print and in need of an update. Tern lovers rejoice!

But it is the height of migratory season here in central Mexico, and that made me also spend some time thinking about this issue of connectivity, and the artificial separations we humans attempt to create. Oil drilling on Alaska’s North Shore suddenly feels personal. After all, for migratory birds, all states are fly-over states.

Arizona, or Central Mexico?

So I can hardly speak with authority on birding in the U.S. This would sound attractive even to me, except for one fact: almost all of those exotic and beautiful species are common down here in central Mexico.
